ARCHIVED MESSAGES: Tech High Class of '51 . October 2002 - June 2014

November 30, 2014:  This Guest Book is no longer active.  It's had a good run, but the SPAMMERS found a way to get to me.  For over one month now, the Guest Book has been getting 4 to 6 SPAM postings per day.  I've tried various tactics but nothing works to keep them out.   Although there's a real person somewhere behind it, the actual postings are now being done by automatic software programs and there's just no way to fight them.  It's very much like automatic robocalls on your phone - no one there unless you answer.  For any further contacts, you'll have to use Email.  Sorry.

Gene

I have finished 7 radiation treatments and 8 of the chemotherapy. So far the main side effects have been weakness, and I tend to nap a lot during the day. Natalie has been my strength, and she's a blessing to me. The good news is that I get the weekends off from the radiation. At this point I'm about 1/4 the way though the treatments. They say I'll lose my hair, but maybe when it comes back it will be curly! My best wishes for Carl Kimberlin as he goes through his treatments. Getting old isn't for sissies!

E-mail address: sue-lee-johnson@comcast.net
Message: Hi Darin,
Les Paul and Mary Ford were very popular in the '50's. We loved their music and of course we danced to it. They had some great music - "Bye, Bye Blues" - "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise" and many others. I think most would agree with me however that our favorite swing music for dancing would have to be Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. When Glenn Miller's "String of Pearls" or "In The Mood" were played it was impossible to remain seated - you just had to dance. The slow dance music from these two bands were also the tops - "At Last" - " Stardust" - "The Nearness of You" and way too many to list. But to answer your question "High How the Moon" was very popular as were all of Les Paul and Mary Ford's music. Yes, it was much faster than most other dance music of the time, but we danced to it just the same.......(just had to dance faster!)
Thanks for your interest. I hope this helped.
Sue Lee Johnson

E-mail address: magicmoments1950@msn.com
Message: To anyone on this board...I'm doing research on the music that was popular in the early 1950's and partcularly interested on people's opinion of that music, as teenagers at the time. I find that a lot of the music in the post-war era was slow ballads and not a lot of upbeat tunes like in the swing era. One song in particular that I'm interested in know ing about id "How High The Moon" by Les Paul and Mary Ford. It came out in the spring of 1951 and was #1 on Your Hit Parade for a few weeks. It had it's own, distinct sound that was like no other, at the time:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ezw_4YTIa8M

I guess my question would be just how popular was this song, in your opinion, and was it well liked by the teenagers at that time? Also, it has a fast beat, so was it danceable, as well?

Message: A belated thanks to all that made the 55th Reunion such a special occasion for Nora and I. The good memories from both times I lived in Memphis came flooding back, starting when I missed the turn onto McLean enroute to Dino's and discovered I was on the street where I had a paper route and then as we pulled up at Dino's I told Nora I had lived a few blocks away on Faxon! Other memories came back the longer I was there!! I discovered from Glenn Lockhart that when I lived on Rayner and went to Rozelle (early 4th grade) that he was there and also discovered people that were at Peabody!! I also didn't remember living so close to both Fairview and Snowden! But Jim Hood really got to me when he told Nora I was Mr. Drane's pet!! Which to some extent was true, but the reason is way too long a story for here. Nora and I had a terrific time and I hope we can make it back sooner than waiting on the 60th!
I really feel I missed so much for ever leaving Memphis!

We wish you all GREAT health and much happiness. Hope to see you all next year.

My words can't adequately express how I appreciate such wonderful friends. I'm so saddened at the death of my dear friend, Howard Busselle. He will be deeply missed by all of us.

This poem is so appropriate:

Make new friends, but keep the old,
Those are silver, these are gold.
New-made friendships, like new wine,
Age will mellow and refine.
Friendships that have stood the test -
Time and change - are surely best;
Brow may wrinkle, hair grow gray;
Friendship never knows decay.
For'mid old friends, tried and true,
Once more we our youth renew.
But Old friends, alas! may die;
New friends must their place supply.
Cherish friendship in your breast-
New is good, but old is best;
Make new friends, but keep the old'
Those are silver, these are gold!

Really a nice site you have here. I have a lot of old photos from these times, as I am the family heirloom keeper; can share them if anyone wishes. So glad Carla (Bennie Mae Frost and Carl Kimberlin's daughter) told me about this site. Carla and I are still friends through the years, as I see many of you are. Old friends are treasures. I was browsing thru the Tech Hi web page and just had to write. One of the greatest, maybe the greatest accomplishment (maybe I should say good fortune) in my entire life was to attend [& somehow graduate :-)] from Tech Hi.

Where my class was of '49, I still know a lot of you from June's Reunions or from one Canteen or another. My one regret is I wish I had been a better personal friend to each of you I do know and had introduced myself to the ones of you I really don't know personally; and became your friend. June & I think of you all often.

We hear of one of you being sick or under the weather and we wish we were there to visit you and bring you a rose bud. We did heard that Sammy Edmundson and Joyce Baker were "kinda puny". We hope they are back to 100% now.

We wish good health and happiness to these and to the rest of you the same. [You're probably wondering if I'm drunk or worse. Neither! Just missing the fellowship we always enjoy with all of you great folks on our trips back to Memphis.] We love you!

But in the latest one, at the time, we had a powerful woodburning stove that would nearly heat our whole house. It had a griddle on top. So at least we were able to stay warm and do a little cooking on the griddle. Guess it was a little like camping. But in JULY, with no a/c, it's not too fun. I remember when we were young, we slept on the front porch on palets when it was SO hot!

Message: I'd like to tell you about a recent noteworthy bit of news concering Gene Gill. He won't make this announcement himself, but you all should know what a treasure we have in this dear man. The TEE RIDDER MINIATURES MUSEUM of the Nassau County Museum of Art (Roslyn Harbor, NY) has acquired one of Gene's miniatures for their permanent collection. They have the model now, so it should go on display soon. It's a very beautiful piece, LE GROS HORLODE, a section of ancient Rouen, France. You can see a photo of it at http://genegillminiatures.com/rouen.html
Gene, we're so proud of you!!!!

Message: Great seeing pictures of the monthly gathering again--Sue, can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your photography; and Gene, all your work on our fantastic website. John is still getting weekly chemo treatments and goes for a shot every day to bring up white blood counts. He's excited about learning to fly radio controlled model planes and goes out to the club's airfield almost daily where a bunch of guys fly their cute planes (some have wings as wide as 8-10 feet). He just completed a small model for practice.

Message: Just went to the teacher memorial page and was very touched but sadly not all were in the picture!! I remember Major Gavin fondly!! One day he sneezed in class but did not make a sound, and then explained that if you were out on a patrol being able to stifle a sneeze could save your life, and then taught us how to do it!! It served me well in the Army and to this day, I still do it!! I will say it drives my wife crazy though!!!

Message: It's me again. Just had to tell you about a recent e-mail message from another Commagere saying he'd been doing geneology on the Commageres for 30 years but had not found John's family info. A search for the name on the net found it in our Tech website, where our e-mail address is also listed. Isn't that spooky? But we're glad he found it and hope he was as impressed with our great website as we are.

Message: Gene, do you know an exact date & time when you'll be on TV? Please let us know--think Dec. 10 was your last estimate. Sue, looking for pictures of your dancing and also the Christmas party. That camera is so good and has to be fixed by now. John had to skip treatments for three weeks because of low platelets--we're hoping he can start again if that is what's best for him. The treatments gave him more energy and better feelings overall, but at some point you usually have to do something else if it stops working. Know the Christmas party was a big success--sorry we had to miss it.
